Adenoma

The most common neoplasm of renal tubular epithelium are papillary adenoma. These lesions are usually discovered during autopsy with a frequency between 7 and 22%. They are located in the renal cortex and are typically <1 cm in size.

Prior to removal of the primary tumor, the extent of the tumor is evaluated, as well as the liver and lymph nodes. The contralateral kidney must be explored by opening Gerota’s capsule and inspecting the entire surface at the time of surgery.

Etiology
Wilms’ tumor originates from abnormal renal histogenesis. Nephrogenic rests or nephroblastomatosis may be precursor lesions of a Wilms’ tumor.
