Bilateral upper tract disease, either synchronous or metachronous, occurs in 2% to 5% of patients with upper tract transitional cell carcinoma. Approximately 40% of patients (range 25% to 70%) with ureteral or renal ransitional cell carcinoma will develop lower tract transitional cell carcinoma in the future, underscoring the need for bladder surveillance following definitive treatment.
